Below are shown a few of the various safe-room designs. Each home has a unique location for the safe-room. These may be included as an option. Closets or bathrooms may double up as a safe-room or you may have a private concelaed room dedicated to that purpose.
The common denominator ideas of all Universal Designed "Smart" Home for the21st Century by Charles Schwab Architectis Life-Span,long -term human safety and building material sustainability. For this reason we have included safe-rooms in some of our plans. You do not need to include a safe-room in your home plans unless you desire to do so. During anemergency it may not be easy for people of all ages and abilities to find a place of refuge or evacuate to a place of safety. We believe a larger bathroom or closet can double up as a safe-room.
A bathroom saferoom may be expensive, however as piping and other connections have to break through the safe-room. There must also be double doors, one storm door and one daily use door. A separate saferoom closet is the easiest most cost efficient way to do include a safe -room unless you expect to use your toilet often during a storm.
The choice is yours and it depends mostly on where you will be building.Thusthe idea of the Universal Designed Safe-room became another new and unique feature in our Universal Designed "Smart" Homes forthe 21st Century home plans.
